The Lyme Regis Golf Club has submitted its third planning application for a covered driving range on their practice ground. The two previous applications, differing little to this one, were refused by the Development Control West Committee at West Dorset District Council.

This development although within Dorset will have its greatest affect on those living in Uplyme particularly Harcombe. Not being represented on the WDDC the people of Uplyme are thus disenfranchised.

The Lyme Regis Town Council support this application, as they did the two previously rejected ones, even though it is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the status of which regarding landscape protection is on a par with National Parks. It is also outside the Defined Development Boundary. The town council has only recently recommended refusal for an Orange application to retain their mobile phone mast on the Charmouth Road car park for these very same reasons.

Why this duplicity?

Because the town council own the adjacent field “Strawberry Field” and are intent to justify to their council tax payers the fact that they have spent over £60,000 on the field. They would have a better chance of developing this field if a foothold of development had begun in the area such as that of the driving range.

Recently a government appointed independent inspector called in to review objections to the West Dorset Revised Deposit Local Plan said of Strawberry Field, that, "Strawberry Fields at Lyme Regis is not a suitable site for built recreational facilities" . (Lyme Regis News 3rd February 2006). This ruling would also apply to the golf club field across the hedge. The problem is that the Local Plan referred to here is yet to be adopted. The town council and indeed the golf club are aware of this and know that once adopted it will put paid to any aspirations landowners have of developing land to the west of Charmouth Road. This has resulted in the present flurry of activity regarding these two fields. It is therefore essential that as many people as possible send in representations against this development. It would be a great shame if this application crept in before the stable door was bolted for all time.

Full details of the application are on the WDDC website at:
http://salisbury.westdorset-dc.gov.uk/PlanningLicensingPortal
The complete application documents may also be viewed at the Lyme Regis Town Council offices

Guidance, history, latest news and suggestions on opposing this application are available at:
http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~rhg/straw/drobject.html

Objections, to arrive by 31st March 2006, need to refer to:

Planning application No. 1/W/06/000161 LYME REGIS GOLF CLUB, TIMBER HILL, LYME REGIS, DT7 3HQ 'Erect single storey timber clad golf driving range, small office, and store, and extend car park (Full)’

Anyone interested in contacting the planners in connection with this application can do so at buildingcontrol@salisbury.gov.uk

They confirmed to me this morning that e-mailed letters will be acceptable.

Thanks for that Geoff but I beg to differ. We are here concerned with Planning and specifically that in West Dorset District Council. The correct email address is :

planning@westdorset-dc.gov.uk

Emails to the Salisbury address would probably be redirected but the more links before finally getting to WDDC give more of a chance of it disappearing on route.

Don’t despair if you failed to get your objections in by the 31st March deadline. This date is always three weeks after a notice is published advertising the planning application. But the advertisement did not appear in the Lyme Regis News of 10th March as the planning office intended. Shocked
It has now appeared in the edition of 31st March. Therefore the new deadline is 21st April. Rolling Eyes

Now what’s your excuse Wink

Great news yesterday for the future of the Harcombe Valley. The application went before West Dorset’s Development Control West Committee and to cut a long story short the application was rejected.

Following the government inspector Jill Kingaby’s report regarding the possibility of built sports facilities on Strawberry Field this must finally be the last nail in the coffin of any hope the town council have of the smallest building on Strawberry Field.

It was very interesting that of the nine members of the committee seven were astute enough to understand why Chairman Cllr. Lovell and Vice-Chairman Cllr. Meech, both also of the Lyme Regis Town Council and up to their eye balls in proposals for Strawberry Field, were supporting the application. It would have been so easy for the magnificent seven to think that the Lyme duo knew what was best for Lyme. I take my hat off to them.

My commiserations to the golfers amongst you but this venture was ill conceived. As suggested at yesterdays meeting by councillors and the case officer why has it not been considered to install the driving range on the main area of the course. This area is flat and screened and not overlooked from higher ground. May I add that the one or two ‘holes’ taken over could be transferred to the practice area.

Remember Uplyme Forum’s first with the news reputation and remember where you first heard this suggestion Wink
