The current debate about the shortage of prison places prompts me to suggest a low-cost solution that would not only solve the immediate prison problem, but also have many beneficial effects on society in general. I am not the first to suggest it - we should de-criminalise all 'recreational' drugs.

A large percentage of crime (and therefore prison places) is drug-related. From petty crime such as housebreaking and mugging to fund the next fix, to the well-armed international cartels who produce and distibute the stuff.

Face it - people who die from a drug overdose die because it is illegal and the black market has no quality control department - dealers are not reputable people. If the government took the drug sales out of the hands of these people, and gave it to high street chemists, then there would be far fewer deaths and a tiny fraction of drug-related crime. There would probably still be drug users - while there are drugs there always will be users legal or not, but at least there would be less drug crime affecting the rest of us.

With the problem out in the open and with some of the vast amounts of money freed up, we could try to support and help the addicts out of their habit and back into society. And before you say I am mad - consider that alcohol, caffeine and tobacco are all drugs. Tobacco is a seriously addictive substance - ask any smoker.

They say it costs 75,000 pounds per year to keep a prisoner in jail - what a dreadful, disgusting waste of money. That's 8 or more peoples entire annual tax contribution thrown away.

It is now time for a brave home secretary to think this through and to do what is right, not what is politically correct.

it's never too late
