A leading choir from the South West is due to visit Lyme Regis to give a concert in aid of the Lyme Regis Organ Appeal. City of Bristol Choir, conducted by David Ogden, will perform popular choral music from around the world at St Michael’s Church on Saturday 21st June. The choir stages five concerts each year in Bristol and is coming to Lyme Regis at the invitation of the organ appeal committee.

Made up of 60 adult singers, City of Bristol Choir has appeared on BBC television, singing on Songs of Praise, and performed with the world-famous City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra last June as part of the choir’s Elgar Festival. As well as performing music by Monteverdi, Palestrina, Faure and Mozart, the choir will sing some new pieces by John Rutter and excerpts from David Ogden’s Cabot Circus Cantata in a variety of languages ranging from Hungarian to Swahili.

David Ogden, the choir’s conductor, visited Lyme Regis in July last year to lead a singing day at St Michael’s Church which involved sixty local people including children from several local school‘s raising funds for the organ appeal. David works extensively with the Royal School of Church Music and with the BBC in religious broadcasting – he has conducted choirs on BBC television, and on BBC Radios 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and the World Service. He is also a composer and his music is performed worldwide – in April 2008 one of his pieces was performed at a mass in Washington DC celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI, with a congregation of over 40,000 in attendance.

St Michael’s Church’s Organ Appeal is fundraising to build a new organ from scratch in the town’s church. The target is £285,000 and the appeal is well on its way, having raised £204,000 since it was launched in June 2006. A wide variety of events have been held including a sponsored silence, choral concerts, recitals, cream teas and dinners.

Tickets for the concert, which begins at 7.30pm 21st June, are on sale from Lyme Regis TIC on 01297 442138. Tickets are £10 for adults, £8 concessions and £2 for children. More information about the choir is available from http://www.cityofbristolchoir.org.uk and about the Organ Appeal from http://www.lymeregisorganappeal.com.
