Hello Uplyme Villagers!

My name is Janke Olthof and I am posting a request for help. Many years ago, in 1981, I was 16 then, I spent a memorable holiday in Uplyme. The holiday has given my life direction, I decided I wanted to study the English language, which I did, and I am now a certified translator Dutch-English as wel as a teacher.

I have long wanted to go back, specifically to the cottage we stayed in. It was called 'southcote' and it was located outside the village, on a narrow road headed with a 'unsuitbale for heavy goods vehicles' sign. The house was thatched, white, and stood square to the road. One had to go through some sort of shed first, and then entered a tiny terrace leading to the front door. There was a sloped, rather derelict garden at the back.

Does anyone recognize this house? Is it still a holiday let? I have contacted the firm we rented it from back then, but they don't let it anymore and could not tell me anything either.

Thank you very much in advance, I love to hear from anyone of you who can tell me more about this house.

Best regards,
Janke Olthof

Hi Janke,

Welcome to the Uplyme debate ! Hopefully someone will have the answer you are looking for.

From the picture, I wonder if the house in question is on Spring Head Rd as the hill in the background of the picture looks like the Knoll ? Does anyone else recognise the picture ?

Is there a Southcote in Spring Head Rd ?

Cheers,
Geoff.

Hi,
I think i may have found it.
I had a look on Google maps and found a house called Southcote near Springhead like Geoff said.

You can see a map Here
Note: if you press the satellite button near the top right then you can see that the fields look similar as well

I think you are both right, it probably is on the road you suggest, only I remember it being on the right hand side of the road coming from Uplyme, and looking at the map I think the house is slightly lower on the map, on the right hand side, a car is parked on the left hand side. Is that possible? And do you know if the house is still a holiday cottage?

Janke

Janke,

Did you ever contact the cottage ? Any luck ?

Geoff.

There is still a house called 'Southcote', in Lower Rocombe Road.
