An indication of how hard the weather has been for wildlife is the appearance of a Bittern that has been strolling around gardens and the river in the Hacker's Mead area. Bitterns are primarily a bird of large reed beds but are driven to other habitats when their food, mainly aquatic forms of life, are locked away by snow and ice. Bitterns have recently recolonised the Somerset Levels although in hard winters unknown numbers come to the UK from Scandinavia and Europe. Although very seldom seen they are famous for their far carrying 'booming' call in the springtime.

If you have seen this bird I would appreciate details of where and when.
