There suddenly seems to have been a rash of people referring to the Olympic Games in the plural. For example a bloke on 5 Live just said: "The Olympic Games start on 27th July". There in only one Olympic Games and it does indeed start on the 27th, so surely this should be "The Olympic Games starts on the 27th."

Most media people seem to be making the same mistake.

Gawd, now you're doing it. "...the sooner it is over...", not they.
There's just one, singular, individual competition called "The Olympic Games" Very Happy

I do agree with you though Will, most astonishing waste of taxpayers money in decades.
If some people want a big sports day, surely they should be the ones who pay for it. Why on earth should the taxpayers who don't want it have to pay?
Only glad I don't live in London.

I think the correct title is The 2012 Summer Olympic Games, officially the Games of the XXX Olympiad or London 2012.

In answer to Geoff’s original question. Too many and this time certainly too close.

Sport – the new opium of the people. Beware, even the government encourages it. When did you last hear of a sports personality fighting for peoples rights, the environment, against wars, campaigning against the government except for more sporting facilities, I could go on but you get my drift? Dedicating your complete existence to sport from the age of 10 to 30 tends to take your eye of the things that really matter, in fact listening to interviews with some of the Olympic contenders brings one close to despair.

Don’t get me wrong I have nothing against sport in moderation but I do fear with hearing of yet another won medal that we will have wall to wall sport for a considerable time ahead.

Do you think it's a truism that top-flight sports people are, almost by definition, extremely selfish? Presumably they don't get to that level without being so.
