Although we grow a lot of our own vegetables, we have just tried a new vegbox service and were so impressed that I thought it should be recommended here.

Riverford Organics have set up a veg box delivery service to our area and several people in the village are now using them. They seem to be very ethical, green, organic etc - but also not as expensive as you might expect. If you are interested in getting a box delivered each week take a look at their website http://www.riverford.co.uk/ which gives full details. We tried the large vegbox and it was something like 13.00 delivered to your door.

Plus points:-
Very convenient,
Good value for money
Delivered to your door free of charge
Reuse of packaging materials.

Minus points:-
No choice over the box contents - whatever is being harvested now is what you get (not surprising really, and not that much of a problem either)

Thoroughly recommend.

I agree entirely with your opinion of Riverford, Geoff. We have been having deliveries fairly regularly for a few months now. Although you can't choose what's in a box, you can choose which size of box to have, and each has different combinations of contents, or a mixed fruit and veg box. Order by Tuesday evening for Thursday delivery. The quality is consistently good, and as you say, not expensive by today's standards.

My only slight gripe is that because of our postcode we come under the Dorset delivery scheme, which means the stuff is transported from South Devon to Wareham, then back again to us. Surely it would make more sense if we were in the East Devon round - which I presume must exist. Part of the point of it all is to cut down on those dastardly food miles ...

At what distance does food miles begin to detract from the produce being organic. There must come a point, and this is a decision each individual must make, at which it becomes preferable to buy really local non-organic produce instead of organic that has undergone much transportation

I didin't know that - that does dound bizarre though. They do seem to be a very 'green' type of company though - maybe they just don't realise about the postcode anomaly ?

Cheers,
Geoff.

This reminds me of our experiences with Swaddles Farm in Chard. We tried to order some organic meat from their website, only to find that the meat goes first to a depot in London before being transported back here by road. How pointless is that?

It seems that Riverford also offer organic meat. Has anyone tried this ? Is it as good as their vegetables ?
