Exmouth Town 5 - Uplyme Youth 3
A close fought match.
Last Sunday was Uplyme Youth’s first match of the season – an away fixture at Exmouth Town.
Exmouth kicked off and went on the attack for the first five minutes but sound Uplyme defence, especially by Anthony Simes, prevented any score. Uplyme came back with a string of passes from the mid-field to striker Kyle Knight but Exmouth’s defence held out. A minute later mid-fielder Sam Jones shot at goal from 30 yards out – a superb curving ball which hit the back of the net in the bottom right hand corner – Uplyme 1. Exmouth were not fazed by this and immediately came back testing the Uplyme defence notably with George Heath assisiting his keeper with a goal-line volley save. Further Exmouth attacking play resulted in several shots, some from corners and free-kicks – all either just missed goal, went to keeper Bret James’ safe hands or were stopped by Uplyme defenders worthy of mention is one of Uplyme’s two new signings Matt Pyle who headed out a certain goal. Play then became more even with Uplyme making chances thanks to mid fielders Jones and Chapple. Indeed Uplyme scored again in the fifteenth minute thanks to a shot thumped in from thirty yards out by Simes. Pressure from Exmouth in the last ten minutes produced many shots and in the end a powerful shot from close in beat keeper James leaving the half-time score Exmouth 1 Uplyme 2.
The second half opened with similar attacking play from Exmouth – for fifteen minutes Uplyme’s defence was kept busy and Uplyme’s other new signing, defender Jack Rumens together with Jack Fox played major parts putting in important tackles when needed. Despite this, in the end, Exmouth won through and evened the score. It was then Uplyme’s turn and took the lead again thanks to good midfield and attacking passes which resulted in success this time from a superb shot from Knight. With perhaps a tiring Uplyme team the last ten minutes of the game were Exmouth’s and they scored three more times despite some breathtaking goal-line clearances by the Uplyme back four.
Uplyme’s Man of the Match was to judged be left-back Jack Fox. Uplyme’s next match is 2.30pm Sunday 28th September away at Exmouth Amateurs.
