|Under 14 East Devon – Trenchard Cup, Quarter Final
Uplyme Youth 1 – Exmouth Town 7
Uplyme Youth beaten by a strong Exmouth Town team.
On a gray day with a cold north-east wind blowing Uplyme kicked off and instantly came under attack. Within a couple of minutes a lobbed ball just went the high side of the Uplyme crossbar but only minutes later a similar lobbed ball found the net. The next ten minutes were a little more even with Uplyme taking up the attack several times, the most notable being by midfielders Anthony Simes and Sam Jones who fed Jack Heath with a useful ball which Heath shot just high and hit the crossbar. Jones also teamed up well with Jack Rumens in midfield. However the Exmouth defence did not buckle but fed their team-mates with good ball which kept the Uplyme keeper Brett James busy and in the fifteenth and sixteenth minutes put two more past him – one straight in from a free-kick. Uplyme’s Jones and Simes had scoring chances but only near misses resulted. In the final minutes of the first half Exmouth scored once more taking the tally to 0 – 4 at half-time.
The play in the second half carried on similarly to the first with attacks and sound defence by both sides but with more vigour by Exmouth which resulted in a very demanding time for the Upyme keeper and his defence. Notably: George Heath who intercepted strikers and volleyed on coming balls with determination and skill and Kierran Bearpark who tackled well and struck the ball well from goal-kicks. Half way through the second half Exmouth scored twice more thanks to very well executed corners and follow-up. For Uplyme, Simes put in a few shots with one going to target giving Uplyme their first goal. The final minutes were all Exmouth’s and again James kept the Uplyme goal superbly but was finally beaten by an attack heavy in numbers in the dying seconds. Final score 1 – 7 to Exmouth.
Uplyme’s Man of the Match was judged be keeper Brett James. Uplyme’s next match is away at Exeter against Beacon Knights in the Quarter Final of the Wellman Cup – 11.30am on Sunday 7th December.
